01

A city tradition, not a single festival

Vienna’s ball season brings together separate events hosted by professional associations and other institutions. Ceremonial openings, waltzes, quadrilles and varied music form a social tradition rather than one single waltz festival or competition.

02

Watching and joining the dance floor

The Vienna Opera Ball opens its dance floor to guests after the ceremonial opening. Dancing as a guest is different from taking part in the opening performance; general admission should not be treated as a performer’s place.

03

Dress rules belong to each event

The Vienna Opera Ball specifies a floor-length ball gown or a black tailcoat with a white dress shirt, white bow tie and black patent leather shoes; a gala uniform is also permitted. These are Opera Ball rules, not a universal dress code for Elmayer or every Viennese ball.

04

Admission and opening-view tickets

Vienna Opera Ball admission does not include a fixed seat; a Spectator Ticket for a live view of the opening is an addition to admission or a table seat. The Opera Ball Office sells directly to guests and states that orders from tour operators or commercial resellers are not accepted. This restriction is specific to the Opera Ball, and this page provides neither ticket sales nor booking on a visitor’s behalf.
