A building tour is not a performance
An opera-house photograph does not tell you whether an experience includes a performance. Paris Opera describes the public areas available on a Palais Garnier visit and notes that rehearsals can close the auditorium. Decide whether you want architecture, an opera or ballet, or both, then read the relevant visitor or performance information.
Consider language as well as the seat
Paris Opera provides French and English surtitling at Garnier and Bastille, but warns that it is not visible from every seat. If following the story matters to you, check language and surtitling visibility before choosing. Decide whether you most value proximity, an overview of choreography, or comfortable access to the text.
Leave room between dinner and curtain-up
Our suggestion is to finish dinner near the venue and allow a separate margin for finding the entrance. Sydney Theatre Company explains that late entry can be delayed to a suitable point, with some productions imposing a lockout. Curtain-up is not the time to start looking for the door; check arrival, screening and bag arrangements in the venue’s current guidance.
Check the house rules, not assumptions
Paris Opera has no specific dress code for ordinary performances, while asking for appropriate attire. Photography is a separate matter: Sydney Theatre Company prohibits recording inside its theatres and asks audiences to switch off devices. Do not transfer a ball’s clothing rules to an ordinary performance, or assume foyer photography means filming the show is permitted.
The journey after the curtain call counts
Add time for leaving the theatre and reaching your stop to the expected finish. NSW transport information treats late-night travel separately, a useful reminder not to assume daytime connections remain unchanged. Before planning an early start the next day, consider whether the evening still leaves the amount of rest you want.
A practical checklist
- Identify whether you are choosing a building visit or a performance.
- Check the language, surtitling view and seat position together.
- Read arrival instructions and photography/device rules.
- Plan the return journey and leave a suitable pace for the next day.
